Wonderland scarves, spring summer 2010

{Comments 0}

“Wonderland” is the perfect fantasy for the SS 10 season.   Inspiration flows from the pages of Lewis Carol’s Alice in Wonderland, from the exquisite illustrations of John Tenniel depicting the fantastical world beyond the rabbit hole, and is recast in a modern light as a collection of digitally printed silk scarves.  Each design has been meticulously rendered by hand, and serves as an extension of Coco’s work as a highly coveted fashion illustrator.

The muse finds herself transported in ink into three distinct fantasy worlds, which serve as stages of what must surely be a most marvelous adventure.  In one instant she sits amongst an explosion of oversized lilies and musical notes, which swirl around bending bars of sound.  In another she stands holding a deck of cards, seemingly beckoning us past a grouping of feathers and flamingos to take a closer look.
The third is a boudoir abstraction of whirling timepieces, mechanisms, and upholstery finishings.
Strong geometric shapes and backgrounds serve as a counterpoint to elegant drawings and swirling realities, giving the sublimely feminine illustrations a stronger, modern appeal.   Each scarf design comes in 3 colour ways, in which brighter and more neutral tones are carefully considered and utilized expertly to give each composition a unique appeal.

Curves ahead! V Magazine

Despite the fashion world’s stick thin model domination, V Magazine has decided to devote an entire issue to curvier women, reports the U.K.’s Daily Mail.

“The Size Issue” includes a high-fashion photo shoot with women who are proud to flaunt their thicker thighs, fuller tummies, large breasts and even their love handles.

The voluptuous models are clad in very little throughout the spread, wearing items like a pair of Guess jeans without a top, Dolce & Gabbana lingerie, a Gucci swimsuit, or in one shot: nothing but some fire engine red lipstick.

Solve Sundsbo, the Norwegian fashion photographer who shot the spread, told the Daily Mail that he “loved the opportunity to show that you can be beautiful and sexy outside the narrow interpretations that normally define us.”

And while plenty of models will most likely turn up their noses at the issue, 2010 might be the year for the plus-sized model.

In recent months, model Lara Stone has become famous in her own right, despite her size eight figure and trademark gap-toothed smile, while Beth Ditto, lead singer of the Gossip, has found runway success with her plus-sized collection for Evans in the U.K.

V Magazine’s “Size Issue” hits newsstands on January 14.

Adorn with animals

Animals can entertain, protect or comfort you; they can also hold a mirror up to your face. Sufficient reason for seeking their company. Represented on jewellery, they are always close at hand.

Since antiquity men has used animals in jewels as metaphor or decoration. Contemporary jewellers still make animal-jewellery, but their intentions have become much more diverse. The technical solutions are no longer limited to working in metal: nowadays animals are drawn, crocheted, sculpted or blown in glass. Some artists carefree use printed images or apply plastic animals made for toys or model making. Even actual animalparts can be detected in some pieces.

Galerie Rob Koudijs from Amsterdam made a selection from the surprisingly diverse, international supply of animal-jewellery. Though expression and content are dominant in autonomous jewellery, nearly all the pieces in the exhibition are a joy to wear. The very few pieces which are only meant as objects, still employ a jewellery-vernacular. The cooperation between CODA and the gallery gives the opportunity, unusual in a museum, to buy the works which are on display.
