Hussein Chalayan is renowned for his innovative use of materials, meticulous pattern cutting and progressive attitudes to new technology, and the Design Museum in London will be having a retrospective of his work between the 22nd January and 17th May.
Leading the forefront of contemporary fashion design, the twice named ‘British Designer of the Year,’ Hussein Chalayan, is renowned for his innovative use of materials, meticulous pattern cutting and progressive attitudes to new technology.
This exhibition is the first comprehensive presentation of Hussein Chalayan’s work in the UK. Spanning fifteen years of experimental projects, the exhibition explores Hussein Chalayan’s creative approach, his inspirations and the many themes which influence his work such as cultural identity, displacement and migration.

Chalayan has worked closely with internationally renowned jewellery designer FLorian on this collection and together they have developed show pieces using Swarovski crystal and delicate crystal pearls. Paring unexpected materials such as wood in the crystal pearl dress, the results are a fusion that is typical of FLorian’s desire for beauty and curiosity

Today’s spectacle was one of the increasingly rare occasions on which fashion still has the power to astonish, provoke, and send a visceral sensation through its audience. This was fashion addressing the subject of fashion, a dissection of our contemporary habit of recycling “vintage,” and an embrace of high technology, all at the same time. It wasn’t just the uncanny sight of the self-undressing clothes (tech-genius courtesy of the team who made the hippogriff in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) that provided the chills.
