Tina Berning
100 Girls On Cheap Paper + The Passengers

Gallery Hanahou is celebrating the release of Tina Berning’s new edition of her sold out classic book ‘100 girls on cheap paper’. At the same time the gallery is presenting the second solo show of the renowned artist in New York: ‘The Passengers’. ‘This body of works has its origins in Tina Berning’s 2009 solo exhibition in Munich titled ‘The Listeners.’ The works from that show have grown and evolved as they travel to New York, becoming ‘The Passengers’.

With ‘The Passengers’ Tina Berning continues to explore the relationships between conditioned aesthetics and supposed subjective ambition in the canon of contemporary visuals. The drawings formulate the artist’s own images of the human body, its inadequacy and its fundamental relation to self-determination. Tina Berning releases figures out of their heteronomous, medial contexts and shifts them into an interplay between voyeurism and exhibitionism. She uses her paintings and drawings as carriers to extricate subjects from the contemporary alienated incapacitation. Codes and matrices blanket faces, streaks of colour lie like shadows over the delicate silhouettes. Interventions that follow Tina Berning’s study to open the plainness of shemes into the ambiguity of expression. She makes subtle corrections to the standard, uniform face and figure, enabling a look of physical expressiveness to return. Even when they appear fragile and vulnerable, the faces and images of the people take on a form that is more resistive.

TINA BERNING, The Listeners

Uncategorized No Comments »

The gallery Andreas Binder shows an exhibition of the artist Tina Berning for the first time.

In her latest works, artist Tina Berning investigates the connections between conditioned aesthetics and individual self-determination. Captured on found paper, Tina Berning liberates what is locked inside the frozen masks of the lifestyle and consciousness industry. She creates both a subjective and critical view of the human body, its  shortcomings, and its basic affinity for beauty. Her interventions expose the studied gestures which bear witness to compulsions and constraints. The drawings and collages are challenging and, at the same time, vulnerable images of familiar interpretations of people, caught in an interplay between voyeurism and exhibitionism.
Tina Berning’s figures are graceful, but they remain incomplete. Streaks of color are laid over fine outlines, bodies fall, spots and spaces overlay the transparent characters. Tina Berning applies subtle corrections to the face of the mass and thus allows an air of physical expressivity to return. For her works, Tina Berning uses paper found at flea markets and old estates. The paper brings traces of aging and transience with it. But it is not just a vehicle for the drawing. Rather, it confronts the supposed ageless norm of a high glossy projection with a lived area of existence.
Tina Berning’s exhibition ’The Listeners’ will be exposed for six weeks at Gallery Andreas Binder.

Tina Berning - NO NIPPLES. NO GUNS. NO CIGARETTES. - November 14, 2008  -  February 15, 2009

Tina Berning is showing her new works ‘NO NIPPLES. NO GUNS. NO CIGARETTES.’ on the November 14th, 2008 at 2 agenten, galerie für illustration in Berlin.

In her exhibition ‘NO NIPPLES. NO GUNS. NO CIGARETTES.’, Tina Berning explores the complex of relationships between conditioned aesthetics and supposed self-determination in the established canon of contemporary images. Within her works she refers to the exemplary representation of the human body as it is spread in the media. She elutes the figures from their surroundings and shows them remaining isolated in their poses. A reinterpretation arises in the interplay of voyerism and exhibitionism. Tina Berning’s exhibition ‘NO NIPPLES. NO GUNS. NO CIGARETTES.’ will be exposed for three months at galerie für illustration.

Please join us for the opening reception on November 14, 2008 at 7pm.
